Container and extinguishing agent testing for critically damaged lithium batteries

On January 16th, VALORCAR participated in a session presenting the results of tests on a container for the transport and storage of critical lithium-ion battery waste and various extinguishing agents for fires involving this waste, conducted by the Center for Studies on Forest Fires (CEIF) of the Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics.

Tests on the second version of the container confirmed compliance with applicable legal requirements for transporting critically damaged batteries, with the exception of some smoke being released to the outside. They also proved the advantages of using thermally insulating and non-combustible filling material (expanded vermiculite, pyrobubbles) in reducing internal temperature. Test results with various extinguishing agents recommend the use of F500 (3% with water and applied with a nozzle) or water alone.

The presentation took place at CEIF, followed by a visit to its facilities where various equipment used in forest fire investigations was demonstrated.
